DFP Laments Extent of Corruption in Dominica; UWP Fingered

Kent Vital

Leader of the Dominica Freedom Party (DFP), Kent Vital, said the extent of corruption in the country is deep and wide. He said this has not only caused serious damage to the polity, but it has also influenced the way people think and behave in Dominica. He said the younger generation is more at risk since they may grow into future leaders who believe that corruption is the natural way of life.

In a similar vein, the DLP has condemned the UWP for orchestrating widespread corruption to attain power at all costs. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit recently blamed the opposition for the trail of violence and pandemonium that hit the country in the course of demanding for electoral reforms. He said the UWP is leading the opposition to destabilize Dominica so that foreigners can take over the electoral process.

While the UWP has refuted the allegations and rebuked the current government for the upheavals in the country, the latest video documentary aired by Aljazeera has set the polity ablaze. The documentary accused political leaders of selling diplomatic passports and ambassadorial appointments in return for huge campaign funds. A significant portion of the documentary focuses on UWP’s Lennox Linton and his tie with former Prime Minister Oliver Seraphin as well as lawyer David Bruney to negotiate diplomatic immunity for foreigners in return campaign funding.

PM Skerrit said this shows the desperation of the opposition to sell the country once they get to power. He blamed Linton and his supporters as well as agents for trying “to legitimize their lies by using foreign agents” and news organizations to manipulate their way into government. Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Edison James has also been fingered as working for the UWP with a view to get them into power using any conventional and unconventional means.

President Charles Savarin has been having consultations with the opposition and the media among other public stakeholders in order to douse the tension building towards the December 6 general elections. A major part of the discussions has revolved around the opposition’s demand for electoral reforms before the election date, with some stakeholders even calling for the postponement of the elections. However, the Electoral Commission revealed they are ready for the election and announced that the voters register is now finalized for coming election, a situation the opposition is not pleased with.
