DFP will not Participate In the Coming Elections, Defers to the UWP
The Dominica Freedom Party (DFP) led by Kent Vital said they will not be participating in the December 6 general elections. The party’s leader said they will be supporting the United Workers Party (UWP) led by Lennox Linton to win the elections. The decision of the party to withdraw from the election is not unconnected with the party’s insistent demands for electoral reforms.
Addressing journalists at the Garraway Hotel, Kent Vital said the UWP is in a stronger position to tackle the DLP at the coming election, adding they will be supporting the UWP instead of fighting from a weak position.
“We recognise the need to press that reset button,” Vital said. “We need that change, and the United Workers Party, given their readiness, they are in a position to take our country to the first step. The Freedom Party will be there next election but that first step is very important, and the party has decided to put the nation’s interest before our own political interest.”
The Freedom Party leader said his party will be ready to contest elections after the tenure of the next government ends in five years. The party in 2018 fielded five candidates with the objective to win the entire 21 seats in parliament, but it is not certain how that will pan out in the light of this recent capitulation.
Vital said his party will continue to educate the masses from the sidelines, and spur them on to vote for the best government. He clarified that the DFP will not be merging with the UWP, but will remain independent and hope that the opposition wins the elections this time around. He said it is very important that UWP takes the first step to oust the current administration, stating that that will turn the country around for all Dominicans within and outside the island.
