Proprietor of Creole Heartbeat magazine, Leroy Charles, has announced the establishment of Diamant Kweyol TV (DKTV), a dedicated 24/7 Creole TV channel that is debuting soon in Dominica. Leroy said the new channel will air on Digiplay and focus extensively on Creole news, entertainment, talk show, and other cultural content.
Charles explained that the objective of DKTV is to educate Dominicans on the history and future journey of the indigenous Creole people with a view to preserving and perpetuating the adoption of the native language.
“We have seen what has happened on Creole Day where we only focus on the food and the wear and very little on the language,” Charles said. “Hence the reason we would like to reignite the conversation and allow more people to actually be excited about the language is because it is not a difficult language; it is a part of us.”
According to the entrepreneur and cultural icon, Dominicans tend to promote the Creole language and culture during the Independence season instead of making it an all-year-round affair. To further expand on the vision of the new Creole TV channel, Charles said the station will be sourcing for raw talents to contribute to the success of the station in the areas of news anchoring, graphic design, journalism, and media personality.
The TV proprietor said the extra crew of TV professionals to be hired for the project may be referred to other media houses where they can also be hired to promote Creole content. He urged Dominican businesses to partner with the new media organization to promote the Creole language and culture so that future Dominicans can understand where they are coming from.
“I will be doing everything in my power to ensure that the language can be passed onto future generations, so I’m urging everyone to support in whatever way possible that they can,” he urged.
