DOMFESTA 2021 Calendar of Activities; and Update on Arawak House of Culture
Chief Cultural Officer Raymond Lawrence has revealed that the theme for this year’s DOMFESTA event is “Moving Forward with Arts and culture.” In highlighting the commencement date for this year’s programme, the cultural officer said the even starts on April 30 and ends on May 29.
While two new cultural events will be added to tray of programmes, Lawrence announced that Alwin Bully and Steve Hyacinth – two distinguished playwrights, will be celebrated at the annual event. There will also be a talent show as well as a song contest dubbed DomFesta and which will be streamed live to audiences around the country.
In a related vein, permanent secretary in the Ministry of Sports and Culture, Lucien Blackmoore, said the Arawak House of Culture which has been undergoing renovation for some months is nearing completion. He said significant progress has been achieved with the rehabilitation of the cultural facility, and that final completion of the project is slated for June 30.
The completion of the house of culture will restore the facility to its ancient glory and facilitate the celebration of new activities in the place. The inner structure is being remodelled and the outer structure is also being rehabilitated to promote cultural values and celebrations in the country.
Apart from the fact that artistes can use the facility to entertain the people, drama groups will also be able to use the facility to tell the Dominican story, while cultural icons and traditional images will be showcased in the new Arawak House of Culture.
