Dominica Advances Sea Moss Production with Strategic Industry Upgrades

The sea moss industry in Dominica has seen significant developments over the past year, with the introduction of a new species of sea moss, Eucheuma Cottonii, which is more lucrative and grows faster than the traditional Gracilaria species. This shift aims to enhance local production and make Dominica a key player in the sea moss market, reducing reliance on imports and fostering economic growth through a sustainable and resilient value chain.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy, and IICA Dominica, is spearheading efforts to boost the sea moss industry. Initiatives include training over 30 farmers and government representatives in sustainable and environmentally responsible production practices and conducting site suitability assessments for expanding production.

Furthermore, a Stakeholder Validation Workshop was held, engaging over 40 participants, including sea moss farmers, business leaders, and government representatives. This workshop aimed to validate the strategies for upgrading the sea moss industry and establish public-private partnerships, enhancing both trade and overall coordination within the industry.

The government and FAO plan to strengthen linkages between the private sector and farmers to boost investment in the sector and enhance its sustainability and resilience. This includes designating specific marine areas for sea moss production and increasing support for marine aquaculture through resources and extension services.
