Dominica and China Sign Agreement on Schools Reconstruction Project

The People’s Republic of China has exchanged letters with the Government of Dominica approving new designs for the construction of six (6) schools in Dominica.

Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Dominica, H.E Lin XianJiang, exchanged the formal letters with Minister for Education, Human Resource Planning & Vocational Training & National Excellence, Hon. Octavia Alfred, during a ceremony at the Office of the Prime Minister on Tuesday.

China will fund the construction of the Goodwill Secondary School and the Tete Morne, Thibaud, Calibishie, Bellevue Chopin and Sineku Primary Schools to the tune of US$30 mil (EC$81 mil).

Prime Minister Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit thanked China for the significant investment in the education of Dominica’s children.

I am extremely pleased for the students, teachers and parents who will benefit from these modern facilities, upon completion. We have ensured that each facility will be built to the most modern standards to accommodate the exploration of students’ interest in various areas. The school plans have taken into account the needs of both students and teachers so that there is effective learning which prepares our children for successful lives in an increasingly challenging world.

So we are in fact looking to 2022 with hope for a brighter future, hope that these six communities will be impacted in a positive way, and with the commitment of the Government of the People’s Republic of China, that has always kept its promises to Dominica, we are confident that these schools will be built and they will be built in a resilient manner.

Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit, Prime Minister of Dominica

H.E Lin Xianjiang told the ceremony China remains committed to assisting Dominica, despite the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Chinese Government and people hold dear the friendship and bond with the Dominican government and people and prioritize offering support to Dominica’s school construction in the hope of being able to help with Dominica’s social and economic development and the improvement of people’s lives.

I have also informed Beijing of the immense support lent by the Prime Minister and the Dominican government to issues concerning China’s core interests and other international affairs. And at the same time we have raised suggestions to our government to give priority to these school projects, which is a nationwide concern to the Dominican people, and complete the approval process as soon as possible.
