Dominica and UNEP to Host Workshop on Coastal Climate Resilience

The Government of Dominica in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Project (UNEP) will host a national stakeholder workshop on Wednesday, June 12, 2024 aimed at strengthening the climate resilience of communities and ecosystems in coastal areas.

The workshop will officially launch the stakeholder consultation process for the preparation of a GCF Funding Proposal for the project “Developing Climate Resilient Integrated Coastal Zone Management in Dominica”, leading to the implementation of a strategy to mitigate hurricane and flood damages along the coastal zones of Dominica.

The project responds to challenges posed to coastal communities by climate change including damage to infrastructure from terrestrial and coastal flooding and storm surges; and the impact of hurricanes on natural assets such as coral reefs resulting in the loss of livelihoods, including in the fisheries, agriculture, and tourism sectors.

Participants will discuss the strengthening of national and local adaptation planning processes, implementing coastal protection measures, and strengthening private sector investment in climate adaptive practices to support early recovery from hurricane events. Discussions will also focus on ways to improve the use of climate information in decision-making in the finance and insurance sectors.

The workshop runs from 9:00 a.m. to 4: 30 p.m. at the Prevo Cinemall, Roseau and will feature addresses from representatives of the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development, Climate Resilience and Social Security, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries Blue and Green Economy and the United Nations Environment Project.
