Dominica Association of Teachers Celebrates World Teachers Day
Teachers: Leading in Crisis; Reimagining the Future
The Dominica Association of Teachers (DAT) celebrated the World Teachers Day (WTD) on Friday, October 2. The association earmarked a series of events to celebrate the occasion and to highlight the efforts and achievements of teachers in Dominica. In fact, over 20 teachers with more than a decade of experience were recognized for their dedication in imparting knowledge to students on the island.
The theme of the 2020 World Teachers Day is “Teachers: Leading in Crisis; Reimagining the Future”. It is a day when teachers are celebrated globally and when the dynamics and challenges of the teaching profession are revisited for key improvements. The worldwide event also seeks to draw attention to the needs of teachers with a view to improving their efficiency within and outside the classroom.
DTA President Mervin Alexander lamented that the media in Dominica does not give teachers the recognition they need to boost their morale, and assured that the efforts and care of teachers remain obvious in the country even in the absence of media attention.
Education Minister Octovia Alfred in her speech noted that the COVID-19 pandemic spurred the education ministry to initiate some drastic changes in the school system which turrned out well for teachers and students, and credited teachers with leading the charge for the positive changes. She appreciated teachers for being at the forefront of educational advancements in the country, and assured them that the government will continue to do everything in its power to make their work productive and rewarding.
