Dominica Braces for Tropical Storm Tammy: School Closures and Preparedness Underway

As Tropical Storm Tammy steadily approaches the Lesser Antilles, Dominica is taking proactive measures to safeguard its citizens and infrastructure. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has announced the temporary closure of all schools on October 20th, prioritizing the safety of the island’s most vulnerable: its children.

While school closures are deemed necessary, the decision regarding work operations remains under continuous evaluation. The prime minister noted that the government is closely monitoring the storm’s progression and will make further decisions based on expert advice and developments.

With a Tropical Storm Warning issued for Dominica, the island nation is actively preparing for the approaching weather system. Despite the hope that Tropical Storm Tammy will steer clear of Dominica, the government remains cautious and proactive in the face of potential hazards.

Tropical Storm Tammy’s current location is approximately 200 miles east of Barbados and 300 miles east-southeast of Martinique. Its forward movement is west-northwest at 13 mph. As of the latest data, the storm is reported to have maximum sustained winds of around 60 mph with higher gusts. Although immediate strengthening is not expected, gradual intensification is forecasted over the next few days.

Tropical Storm Tammy is projected to approach or pass over the Leeward Islands on Friday and Saturday before moving north of the region. It may potentially achieve hurricane intensity as it nears the Leeward Islands. The situation is being closely monitored and updates are being communicated to ensure public safety.

The authorities are taking preemptive measures and are ready to respond effectively should the storm’s impact become more severe. As with any natural disaster, the safety of the population is paramount, and Dominica is working diligently to minimize the risks associated with Tropical Storm Tammy, focusing on preparedness and timely communication.
