Dominica Celebrates International Migrants Day with Film Screening
The Commonwealth of Dominica is celebrating the International Migrants Day on Wednesday, December 18. The event will go with the cinema screening of the movie “One Way Ticket” at the Emerald Movies in Roseau.
The local communication and community engagement officer of the United States International Organization for Migration, Maxine Alleyne-Esprit, said this is the first time that Dominica will be joining the rest of the world to celebrate the event.
Alleyne-Esprit said the celebrations will last for only one day. She said Dominica will be part of the Global Migration Film Festival scheduled to highlight issues that migrants face in their quests for greener pastures. She revealed that after the movie One Way Ticket is shown at the cinema, that stakeholders will open discussions on migration issues.
The UN migration officer said migration is not to moving from one country to the other but that migration could occur from one city to the other within the same country.
“The Caribbean is made up of migrant societies, and our societies are based on migration,” she said. “We came here from other places, and we also leave here often and go to other places. So this is just an attempt to bring some attention to migration and to open up a discussion.”
Alleyne-Esprit said anyone with adequate knowledge of migration issues is invited to come and speak at the discussion programme at the Emerald Cinema.
