Dominica Chosen to Stage Two-Year Recycle OECS Model Demonstration Project
Dominica has been chosen to stage a two-year recyle OECS model demonstration project. Head of the OECS’ Environmental Sustainability Division, Chamberlain Emmanuel, announced earlier this month during the World Ocean’s Day that Dominica and Grenada qualified for the demonstration project.
The Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation (DSWMC)’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Rhoda St. John, said the project was spearheaded by the OECS Commission together with the Agence Francaise de Developpement (AFD) and sponsored by the EU. She said the project will last for two years and aligns with the European Union Zero Waste programme in the Caribbean.
St. John said this initiative will promote the EU-Caribbean collaboration in solid waste management and circular economy and also diminish plastic pollution in the OECS. While affirming that Dominica has an existing recycling programme already in place, the DSWMC PRO said the two-year recyle OECS model demonstration project will promote the one being run within the Nature Isle already.
According to St. John, the two-year recyle OECS model demonstration project will cover institutional framework, legislation, technical support, and financial and public awareness; and the two main outputs will be public policy dialogue and public awareness engagement on social media, local communities, stakeholders engagement, and private sector educational institutions among others.
For a more effective waste recycling and disposal result in Dominica, St. John said waste separation is best done at the source.
