Dominica Flops at CONCACAF Qualifier with 10-0 Loss to Nicaragua
Dominica has come to the end of the road at the 2022 CONCACAF tournament. Dominica lost 10-0 to Nicaragua on Friday and has been shown the way home. Coach Albert Titre expressed sadness at the loss but commended the players for putting up a diligent fight against their opponent.
Just two weeks ago, the senior women team trounced Turks and Caicos Islands 8-1 at the Windsor Sports Stadium in Dominica, and had hoped for a repeat of the victory over Nicaragua; but they lost flatly. Nicaragua scored their first goal in the second minute of the match and scored four more before the end of the first half; and they scored another five at the second half.
Dominica made a few player changes in the second half of the game to up their chances of recovery, but this did not pay off. Titre agreed that the Nicaragua team exhibited superior expertise on the field, but noted that the Dominican side learned a lot from their loss and eventual exit from the CONCACAF tournament.
All in all, it was a learning process for us locally; because as you saw, we played with a full local team and a number of young players which really put on a fight. I want to commend the ladies for the fight that they put up, remember they had not played football for nearly three years because of the COVID-19 pandemic so to really get to that level was indeed great and for that, I want to commend them.
Albert Titre, Coach
Titre also encouraged local clubs to groom players through local competitions and diligent trainings. He said the Dominica Football Association (DFA) should not be blamed for match losses, and the coaches should not be blamed either. But players should put up hard work in their games, most especially in tactical push and defence.
He noted that the girls would have done better if they played on natural grass instead of artificial turf in Nicaragua. Dominica made the fourth with three points in their group with Trinidad & Tobago at the top, followed by Guyana.
