Dominica Records 28 New Active COVID-19 Cases, Bringing Total Cases To 63

Dominica has recorded 28 active COVID-19 cases, bringing the total confirmed cases of the pandemic to 63 in the country. This revelation was made by national epidemiologist Dr. Shallaudin Ahmed who announced on Friday that two new cases were discovered in Mahaut-Jimmit village; and there is now 21 confirmed cases in that cluster.

Dr. Ahmed made it clear that 239 contacts were tested after tracing in Mahaut-Jimmit, and that 219 of these returned negative while 20 tested positive. He added that four other imported cases have been isolated at a government treatment facility and all primary contacts that interacted with the four tested negative for coronavirus.

“As of today, the total number of cases is now 63,” Ahmed disclosed. “The total number of active cases is now 28. As of now, there is no evidence of mass exposure to COVID-19 and it is very unlikely that there has been any community transmission.” The Ministry of Health reiterates their call for people to continue observing social distancing, using face masks, and frequently washing their hands to curtail and eliminate the spread of COVID-19. Government authorities also caution against illegal immigration and harbouring of unregistered visitors. The government officials state that illegal entry into the country through the backdoor is responsible for the recent hike in the number of COVID-19 cases in the country.
