Dominica Red Cross Builds Capacity with One-Week Training

Dominica Red Cross (DRC) builds capacity with one-week training. The training programme was targeted at employees, community voluteers and other stakeholders in the island state. It was facilitated by DRC Logistics and Warehouse staff in collaboration with relevant agencies under the National Societies Logistic Capacities Enhancement Programme for efficient Disaster Management in the Caribbean.

The one-week logistics training programme was attended by members of the eight branches of the DRC in the country. The main objective among other things is to build capacity which will enable all branches and humanitarian agencies to appropriately respond to natural disasters when they strike. The participants will also be able to receive and manage external aids procured to minimize the impacts of such disasters on people.

Furthermore, participants at the programme were exposed to how warehouse operations run and the necessary documents that must be processed for the receipt and distribution of humanitarian aids. The documents include bin or stock cards. Partners of the DRC promised to develop a logistics software that will facilitate the coordination of relief materials in the country.

With increased logistical capacities, all Red Cross National Societies will be better positioned to increase human and material efficiency as well as improve the monitoring and integration of all agencies to effectively coordinate disaster management. Meanwhile, local DRC partners, representatives of the local government, Office of Disaster Management (ODM) and the Ministry of Health were all present at the week-long training.

The DRC Logistics and Warehouse staff partnered with other agencies such as the French Red Cross PIRAC, the European Union Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid (ECHO), and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescents (IFRC) to make the training possible.
