Dominica Rejects U.S. Sanctions on Cuban Medical Brigade

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to the Cuban medical brigade, rejecting U.S. claims that the program constitutes forced labor. His remarks come as Washington imposes sanctions on nations employing Cuban doctors, arguing that Havana profits unfairly from medical professionals working abroad.

Skerrit dismissed the allegations and defended Cuba’s longstanding contribution to Dominica’s healthcare system. He emphasized the critical role Cuban doctors have played in the country, particularly in times of crisis, such as the aftermath of Hurricane Maria and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cuban medical personnel have been instrumental in strengthening our healthcare system. We will not allow external pressures to dictate how we engage with a country that has provided us with much-needed support.

Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit, Prime Minister of Dominica

Cuba’s medical cooperation with Dominica has been a key factor in improving access to healthcare, especially in rural areas where specialist doctors are scarce. The program has also provided training opportunities for Dominican medical students, who have benefited from scholarships to study in Cuba.

With U.S.-Caribbean relations evolving after these sanctions, regional leaders are exploring diplomatic avenues to maintain access to Cuban medical expertise. Skerrit’s firm stance signals Dominica’s intent to preserve its longstanding alliance with Cuba, despite geopolitical tensions that could complicate future cooperation.
