Dominica Rolls Out AstraZeneca COVID-19 Vaccination to the General Public

Beginning on Monday, February 22, the government has begun to roll out the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccination to the general public. PM Roosevelt Skerrit encouraged all interested Dominicans to register for the vaccination and to receive the jab for the benefit of everyone. While the vaccination is not mandatory or enforced on anyone, Skerrit said foreign nationals and visitors who are presently in the country can also get vaccinated at no costs.

“Our friends from the Dominican Republic, you can certainly get vaccinated; our Haitian friends, you can get vaccinated as well, and all our wonderful people who are resident here working or on vacation, we are prepared to extend these vaccines to you,” Skerrit declared. “This is a public good and we need to ensure that everyone who would like to get vaccinated can get vaccinated.”

President Charles Savarin was the first Dominican to be innoculated on February 12, and Health Minister Dr. Irvin McIntyre and other frontline health workers have gotten vaccinated since then. It is now the turn of everyone in the country to receive the jab. According to Skerrit, there is enough vaccines to vaccinate 25,000 Dominicans with double doses, and another batch of 20,000 vaccines are expected from China in the coming weeks.

“The Ministry of Health has arranged for vaccinations to take place from Monday from 9 am to 3 pm, which is from Monday to Friday,” Skerrit announced. “The main type 3 health centers where the vaccines will be given are as follows; the Roseau health center, the Grand Bay health centre, the St. Joseph health center, the Castle Bruce health center, the Marigot health center, and the Portsmouth health center.”

Individuals can pre-register for the vaccination online at vaccineregistration.dominica.gov.dm or by visiting the seven designated health centers. The prime minister said he will be getting his own shot on Tuesday at the DCFH instead of his hometown of Vieille Case.
