Dominica Solid Waste Management launches waste management campaign for 2021

The Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation in its island-wide fight against littering, has developed a waste management campaign for 2021. About the 2021 Waste Management Campaign Littering leads to the degradation of the natural environment and is of grave concern to the Corporation. The Corporation recognizes the need to raise awareness of this issue at a national level, getting all stakeholders involved in the fight to ensure proper waste management, and accomplishing its goals through sensitization and education of best practices and behavioral change for proper waste disposal. As we look at 2021, we will also focus on the COVID-19 pandemic and how this campaign can help in its control by keeping our environment clean. A clean environment reflects personal hygiene. The health protocols established by the regular washing and/or sanitization of hands and maintaining clean surroundings is all part of the drive to proper hygiene. Solid Waste plays and integral role in the country’s litter disposal, and underscores the need for inclusion of everyone to achieve is goals. Our goal is to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle waste to help in proper waste management, thus getting every sector of society involved, as part of the process, is key. Proper waste disposal is everyone business. This will have tremendous positive impact on our country, once we all work together. Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation, would be elated to work with you, your company, staff, community, the general public to achieve the goals of proper waste management. Schedule of Activities: March to May We are looking to officially launch the campaign on the 29th of March 2021. A response from you by Monday the 15th would be more that appreciated and we can have another face to face to discuss the partnership in detail before the official launching. The first aspect of the campaign begins in March with the School competition that will take the format listed below: Tourism month is the month of May and we will be working with Discover Dominica Authority to bring awareness to our young minds, we have put together 3 various competitions, one for the Primary, Secondary and College students, respectfully. Kindly see competition as it varies between education level: Primary School – A “Do Not Litter” posterSecondary Schools – A “Do Not Litter” slogan competition; where the students get to create slogans on littering and a 15 seconds jingle with video for the slogan they come up with.Tertiary Institutes – An essay competition with the topic: How does littering contribute to marine pollution and what are its effects on the Caribbean tourism (1500 words) This will run during the month of April and May with the winner selected in May and prizes awarded to winners. The first phase is where the children create their posters and slogan, second- the judges narrow them down to a certain amount and these selections are placed online for voting by the general public and third winners selected. Benefits of The Campaign: We believe that this will raise much needed awareness on littering and disposing of garbage, tourism and global warming, increase student awareness who will in turn become ambassadors of proper waste management. We would appreciate your responses by the 26th of March 2021 as we look to have the official launching of the campaign on the 29th of March 2021, where your involvement would be vital.
