The Dominica State College (DSC) stood victorious against the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College (SALCC) of St. Lucia in a spirited debate competition named ‘Debate Battle of The Colleges’. The competition took place on July 7, 2023, in St. Lucia, bringing out the intellectual prowess of students from both colleges.
In the first round, the DSC team, represented by Ajani Shillingford, Khalil Stoute, and Bijoux Desiree, put up a strong fight against SALCC. Despite their valiant effort, SALCC came out ahead with 1104 points against DSC’s 1015. The contentious topic of debate was whether “The benefits of artificial intelligence (AI) outweigh the potential risks to humanity,” with SALCC proposing and DSC opposing the moot.
The second round, however, saw a reversal of fortunes. This time, the DSC team, consisting of Janice Corbette, Megann Mendes, and Sasha Maxwell, took the opposing stance on the moot, “The key cause of gang culture in the Caribbean is the prevalence of debilitated families.” With their sound arguments, they triumphed over SALCC, scoring 1154 points to SALCC’s 1032.
When all the points from the two rounds were tallied, DSC was declared the overall winner of the competition, amassing a total of 2169 points against 2136 from SALCC. The DSC debaters received accolades for their consistent performance throughout the competition, with their counterparts from SALCC commending them as formidable opponents.
