The Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) results released by the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth Affairs indicate that Dominican students topped the table with 8.5% performance above regional average. Local CXC Registrar, Magalie Celestine, said 46 students from 13 secondary schools got at least six grade ones in the exam where 1,160 students candidates sat for 33 subjects this year.
Some schools performed better than others with some students coming tops in their respective schools. The Castle Bruce Secondary School (CBSS) passed excellently in this year’s exam, with 10 out of the 46 top Dominican students coming from the school. Among these was Nia Belle from Kalinago Territory who got grade ones in all the 13 subjects she sat for. Belle attributed her success to her teachers, parents and friends.
“I feel accomplished and happy that I was able to make myself, friends, teachers, and parents proud,” she said. “The harder you work for something, the greater you feel about your accomplishments. Thank you to my family, friends, and teachers of the Castle Bruce Secondary for their support during it all.”
Ten of the 46 Dominican students who came tops in the CSEC exam came from CBSS, with Belle emerging the topmost performer of the 10. She plans on becoming an aeronautical engineer but wants to start on that journey by enrolling first at the Dominica State College (DSC) for an electrical engineering course.
The 10 CBSS students with the highest grades are:
- Nia Belle – 13 ones
- Adiscia Burton – 11 ones
- Christon Pascal – 8 ones, 3 twos
- Lisa Ernest – 8 ones, 2 twos
- Edrika Christmas – 7 ones , 4 twos
- Hymah Corbette – 7 ones, 4 twos
- Jerren Seraphin – 7 ones, 4 twos
- Melisia Valmond – 7 ones, 2 twos
- Mayah Baptiste– 6 ones, 5 twos, 1 three
- Trish Sanford – 6 ones, 1 two , 1 three
“I feel elated, seeing that Castle Bruce Secondary School is just 20 years young and to come out on top this year, really we feel that our hard work has paid off,” said Clive Edwards, Deputy Principal at CBSS.
However, Local CXC Registrar Magalie Celestine said the total number of students who got grades 1, 2, and 3 dropped by as much as 1.6% this year as against the results for 2018. She still commended three schools that showed significant improvement in their total performance.
“Overall, three schools showed mass improvement in their overall performance: Orion Academy moved from 40% in 2018 to 85.7% in 2019; Goodwill Secondary moved from 47.7% in 2018 to 58.8% in 2019; and the Pierre Charles Secondary moved from 67.7% in 2018 to 77.9% in 2019.”
“Your performance is indeed commendable, and the government of Dominica remains proud of your conscientious efforts to empower yourselves with knowledge and skills for future success,” said the Minister for Ecclesiastical, Gender and Family Affairs and Acting Minister for Education and Human Resource Development, Catherine Daniel. “But, this is just one ingredient…you need other aspects. Academics alone is not sufficient. So, the attitudes, trust, and honesty are key factors in one’s life journey.”
