Dominica to Observe World Children’s Day

Dominica will observe World Day of Prayer and Action for Children and World Children’s Day (WCD) on November 20th, 2020 under the theme ‘Reimagine the Future’.

World Children’s Day seeks to promote international togetherness among children and to promote their welfare.

The theme for this year’s observance speaks to the fact that children need to reimagine a bright future among all the changes in their life and environment, especially during Covid-19.

The Welfare Division of the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment, Youth at Risk, Gender Affairs, Seniors’ Security and Dominicans with Disabilities will hold a week of activities to mark World Children’s Day from November 15-20th, 2020.

The week will open with a church service at the Canefield Gospel Mission Church on Sunday November 15th, 2020 from 11:00am and end with the painting of a mural at a selected Primary School on Friday November 20th, 2020.

Among other activities for the week is a radio address by Dr. Addis King, Minister for Youth Development and Youth at Risk, a panel discussion featuring students of the Dominica State College and visits to Primary Schools.

Other highlights of the week are poetry, art and song competitions among schools and a bonding competition which is extended to the public whereby parents can record themselves doing a fun activity with their child or children and email to toussnikss@gmail.com or bring to the office via flash drive or other medium.

The objective of the bonding activity is to encourage parents to spend quality time with their children.

The Division is pleased that KFC Dominica and Do it Centre has agreed to sponsor the week of activities in an effort to ensure its successful completion.

Mrs. Nicole Toussaint Jno-Baptiste, Coordinator of the Child Abuse Prevention Unit of the Welfare Division said “the activities to mark World Day of Prayer and Action for Children and World Children’s Day are intended to raise awareness to the needs of children as vulnerable members of society.”

Mrs. Jno. Baptiste anticipates a successful week of activities and encourages full participation from members of the public.
