Dominica Twin Festival Raised Over $2,000 for Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

On January 2, 2024, a significant milestone was achieved as a cheque of XCD 2,250 was handed over to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Dominica China Friendship Hospital (DCFH). The generous donation was received by Nurse Supervisor of the NICU, Sr. Magdalene Georgia Joseph, on behalf of her department.

This significant contribution arises from a series of captivating events organized under the banner of the Dominica Twin Festival—a groundbreaking initiative in Dominica designed to celebrate the distinctiveness and interconnectedness of multiples. The funds generated will play a pivotal role in elevating the standard of care for the smallest and most vulnerable members of our community—babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

This cause assumes heightened importance as statistics underscore that one out of four twin infants embarks on the demanding path of NICU admission, a rate exceeding five times that of their singleton counterparts. The proceeds were generated through a diverse range of events, notably the Twin Symposium and the main attraction, the Twin Festival.

The Twin Symposium, a highlight of the festival, featured distinguished speakers including Dr. Joan Friedman, a renowned twin psychologist, therapist, and author from the United States, and Dr. Rudy Blanc, an Obstetrics and Gynecology specialist, and the Medical Director at the Dominica China Friendship Hospital (DCFH).

Additionally, the Twin Festival, held on December 17, 2023, took the form of a brunch event with the theme “Toast to Twins”. This unique gathering brought together numerous twins and multiples from across the island, providing them with a platform to showcase and joyously celebrate their individual uniqueness. Also noteworthy, was a commendable donation of three boxes of baby wipes, from Little Loves Baby Store, which were also handed over to the hospital staff.

Leandra Lander, the visionary force driving the festival, extended heartfelt appreciation to all sponsors, collaborators, twins, and the wider community for their unwavering support, which was crucial in transforming this initiative into a resounding success.

Looking ahead, she expressed optimism about the future of the event, stating, “We hope to be able to DOUBLE our support and donations in the 2024 TWIN FESTIVAL!!!”
