Dominica Welcomes LIAT 20’s Return, Enhancing Regional Air Travel
The inaugural flight of LIAT 2020 to Dominica was celebrated with a vibrant welcome at Douglas-Charles Airport, where the sound of African drums set the festive tone. This event marked the beginning of LIAT 20’s newly introduced service to the island, as the airline continues to expand its reach to more Caribbean destinations.
LIAT 2020 is a collaborative venture between Caribbean governments and Nigerian airline Air Peace, launching with a fleet of seven aircraft. Backed by the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Gaston Browne, LIAT 20 has scheduled three weekly flights to Dominica, aimed at enhancing travel options and contributing to the island’s growth as a premier tourist destination.
Arthur Senhouse, LIAT 2020’s Director of Operations, acknowledged the efforts of Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister in reviving the airline after the collapse of LIAT 1974. He expressed confidence in the new venture’s ability to fill gaps in regional air travel, considering it a timely and necessary development.
Passengers on the chartered flight from V.C Bird International Airport, including LIAT 2020 officials, media representatives, and distinguished guests, arrived in Dominica to commemorate this significant milestone. The return of LIAT 2020 is more than just a business initiative; it represents a shared commitment to advancing Caribbean tourism.
Benoit Bardouille, CEO of Dominica Air and Sea Ports Authority (DASPA), highlighted the significance of LIAT 20’s return in the context of improving air accessibility to the island. He noted that the ongoing construction of Dominica’s new international airport, expected to be completed by 2027, will further enhance the country’s appeal to international visitors. Bardouille also addressed recent challenges with regional connections, expressing optimism that LIAT 20 will help resolve these issues.
Marva Williams, CEO of the Discover Dominica Authority, emphasized the importance of collaboration in achieving the nation’s tourism goals. “Our partnerships are crucial in elevating Dominica as a top travel destination,” she stated.
Looking ahead, the arrival of LIAT 2020 marks a significant step forward in Dominica’s efforts to improve connectivity and promote tourism, ensuring that the island remains accessible to both regional and international travelers. The initiative is expected to bolster economic activities, create new opportunities for collaboration, and enhance Dominica’s position within the Caribbean region.
