Dominica Welcomes Young Leader Chalika Vidal as New Opposition Senator
Chalika Vidal, a 23-year-old from Salisbury, has officially been sworn in as the newest senator representing the Parliamentary Opposition in Dominica. Taking her oath before Speaker of the House of Assembly, Joseph Isaac, Vidal steps into a role previously held by Senator Sean Douglas, whose appointment was recently revoked following decisions made by Opposition Leader Jesma Paul-Victor.
This change reflects a strategic adjustment within the opposition, aiming to uphold the dignity and credibility of the democratic governance processes.
With a background rooted in community service and involvement in cultural activities, Vidal has demonstrated a strong commitment to her community. Her active participation in the Salisbury Sports Committee and engagement in various cultural events highlight her dedication to public service. Vidal, who also participated in the 2023 Miss Wob Dwiyet competition, has been recognized for her love for culture and community since her early education at Salisbury Primary School and later at Isaiah Thomas Secondary School, where she graduated with honors.
In her new role, Vidal plans to leverage her educational background in Economics and Psychology, which she pursued at Dominica State College, to represent her constituents effectively. At the Dominica State College, she was notably active, holding leadership positions in the Environmental Club and the Student Government Association, and participating in the Debate Club.
Delbert Paris, a fellow Opposition Senator, has expressed confidence in Vidal’s capabilities, noting her potential to excel in her duties as a senator. Vidal has articulated a strong belief in the values and vision of the parliamentary opposition and is committed to furthering her education in marketing and communication to enhance her effectiveness in governance.
Her entry into politics is seen as a promising addition to the country’s legislative body, bringing a fresh perspective and youthful energy to the forefront of national discussions and policymaking.
