Considering the widespread fear and hysteria surrounding the outbreak of coronavirus in China, a Dominican student studying in the country has provided safety updates on how the Chinese government is protecting everyone.
Darron Bruno is among 15 Dominican students studying in China on government scholarship. He assures everyone back home that they are fine and that the Chinese government continues to put checks in place to protect everyone. Bruno said he is really not afraid of contracting the virus given the level of health safety put in place by the government, but “my family is worried about me, so that makes me a little afraid. I feel safe in school because the school is trying their best to keep us safe from the virus.”
He said the Chinese government is fighting the disease to a standstill, and that students are restricted to their campuses while their rooms are constantly disinfected.
“The school has ensured that people who [have] left do not come back until the virus has cleared out,” Bruno said. “I live at the school, and the school is taking care of us – sometimes they give us masks, sometimes they come to clean or disinfect the room. I can’t really go out of the campus; the canteen has just opened so we can get our food.”
Chinese health authorities revealed that there have been 20,438 confirmed cases in the country. There have also been 23,214 suspected cases in the country, 2,788 severe cases, and 425 deaths. Meanwhile, 632 patients have been treated and discharged from the hospital following their cure.
Meanwhile, the Charge D’affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Dominica, Luo Songtao, assured Dominicans that his government is on top of the coronavirus threat and that there is really no cause for alarms.
“There is no need to panic,” Songtao said. “We are confident that we will win the battle. We have taken extraordinary measures… we have full determination, confidence and capability to win this fight against the epidemic.”
