Dominicans in New York Walk the Streets to Protest Injustices in Dominica
Following the unhindered success of the street walk organized by activist Atherton Martin last week Wednesday, Dominicans in the United States have also agreed to conduct such walks. Led by Adelaide Paul who is based in New York, the scheduled walk is to boost the morale and objectives of Dominicans who clamour for peace and justice back at home.
Tagged “Dominican Diaspora Solidarity Walk for Peace and Prosperity,” the walk will take place on Saturday, April 9, and will commence at Ralph Bunche Park in New York beside the United Nations headquarters and terminate at the Dominican Consulate. Dominicans in the city are encouraged to wear white for the walk planned for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Just as Martin had pointed out, Paul said the New York walk is not a protest or a march, but simply a street walk to draw attention to what is happening in Dominica. She stated that Dominicans in the diaspora also suffer the injustices experienced by those back at home, and they are impacted by the sorrows and joys of people in the eastern Caribbean country.
Paul is also asking for the immediate resignation of Dominica’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Loreen Bannis-Roberts, for signing a bilateral trade with Syria on Dominica’s behalf. She is also demanding the resignation of Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Kenneth Darroux and Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit for claiming ignorance of the affair.
We do not want her [Bannis-Roberts] to wait until the 31st for her resignation to take effect; we call on the immediate resignation or termination of Mrs. Bannis-Roberts. If he [Roosevelt Skerrit] claims there was no knowledge by neither he nor [the] foreign minister, it clearly shows the incompetence in our governance and the manner in which business is done.

Meanwhile, Martin will also be leading Dominicans for another walk today Wednesday, and he said he met with Police Chief Daniel Carbon who consented to the walk. The activist, therefore, urged all Dominicans who will be engaging in the walk to conduct themselves orderly so those police officers will not be forced to interact with the people in any way.
