Dominica’s 45th Independence Celebration Kicks Off with Diverse Calendar of Activities

As Dominica marked its 45th Independence Day, the atmosphere was filled with festivity, unity, and cultural pride. The theme for this year’s celebrations, ‘Annou Sélébwé,’ served as a reminder of the indomitable spirit that has guided the nation through numerous challenges.

A Call for Unity and Celebration

Culture Minister Gretta Roberts delivered an impassioned address, calling on Dominicans to embrace the spirit of togetherness. She urged the nation to set aside political differences and join in the celebration of their culture and heritage.

Roberts emphasized that despite facing adversity, including natural disasters and economic shocks, Dominica’s resilience shines through. She encouraged everyone to contribute to their communities and to the nation as a whole, reinforcing that the responsibility of building and protecting Dominica rests with each citizen.

Diverse Activities for All Ages

The calendar of events for the 45th Independence Celebration has something for everyone. Glamorous pageants, traditional Jing Ping and dance competitions, and school-based celebrations are all part of the festivities. The cultural semi-finals held in various regions showcase the nation’s rich heritage and talent.

Throughout October, Dominicans will have the chance to celebrate their culture every Friday with events like Jounne Panyen, Jounne Chapo Pay, and Had Kweyol. The highlight of this cultural immersion will be on Creole Day, October 27, when Dominicans are encouraged to proudly wear their national attire.

A Time for Reflection and Contribution

Minister Roberts underscored the importance of reflection during this period. She encouraged individuals and communities to contemplate how they can contribute to the nation’s development. This reflection aligns with the Prime Minister’s call for a reset, emphasizing solidarity and collective effort.

Roberts reiterated that the nation’s sense of community should transcend political differences. Independence, she argued, offers an opportunity to rekindle the spirit of togetherness. As Dominicans unite to celebrate their heritage, they must also renew their commitment to each other and the common good.

The Independence Celebration is a momentous occasion for Dominica and its people. It’s a time to honor the nation’s journey, celebrate its culture, and envision a brighter future. With a diverse array of activities planned, Dominicans of all ages will have the opportunity to participate in the festivities, reinforcing the spirit of unity and pride in their beloved nation.

As Dominica celebrates its 45th Independence, let the indomitable Dominican spirit guide the way, for it has seen the nation through many challenges and will continue to do so for generations to come.
