Dominica’s New Ambassador to Cuba: Ian Douglas Assumes Diplomatic Role
Ian Douglas, the former Minister for Trade, Commerce, and Entrepreneurship, is embarking on an exciting new journey as Dominica’s Ambassador to Cuba. With eagerness in his voice, he expressed his commitment to strengthening the bond between the two countries during an interview on State-Owned DBS Radio. Taking over from Matthew Walter, a seasoned Parliamentary Representative, Douglas aims to build upon the already established rapport.
As he sets out on this diplomatic endeavor, Douglas emphasized the potential for agricultural growth in Dominica. With aspirations to achieve a significant contribution of $700 million from agriculture to the Gross Domestic Product by 2030, he believes that Cuba’s expertise and technology can be instrumental in realizing this ambitious goal.
Reflecting on the long-standing relations between the two nations, Douglas revealed that the ties with Cuba go back to 1979, even during times of opposition. He expressed gratitude for the fraternal relations and looks forward to further strengthening them as the Ambassador in Cuba.
One of the areas of interest for Douglas is the Cuban scholarship program. He envisions the possibility of expanding this program to foster educational exchanges between the two countries, nurturing the intellectual and cultural ties.
However, Douglas acknowledges the challenges in the agricultural sector and sees the potential for mutually beneficial exchanges with Cuba. By tapping into the knowledge and resources available in Cuba, he envisions enhancing Dominica’s agricultural industry.
As he takes up his new role, Ian Douglas is determined to embrace the spirit of collaboration, seeking opportunities to fortify the alliance between Dominica and Cuba, while striving to unlock the full potential of the agricultural sector.
