Dominica’s Vision for Progress: A Holistic Development Update

During his 45th independence address, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit revealed a comprehensive vision for Dominica’s advancement. This encompassed a range of strategic initiatives and projects spanning various sectors.

Starting with agriculture, Skerrit emphasized his government’s dedication to achieving a $700 million contribution to the economy from this sector by 2030. Efforts to support farmers include financing, technical assistance, greenhouses, and space for agricultural start-ups, particularly encouraging the youth to engage in farming.

Skerrit then reiterated the “Building Back Better” commitment in the housing sector. Nearly 358 housing units are close to completion, scheduled for handover in the first half of 2024. Plans are also in motion to construct 327 homes for relocation and resettlement of residents in vulnerable areas. Furthermore, 50 new homes in Warner and Cotton Hill will help young professionals and employees achieve homeownership.

The healthcare sector is experiencing growth, with 11 communities benefiting from new and upgraded health and wellness facilities funded through the Citizenship by Investment Programme. Skerrit also highlighted the transformation of other health facilities into SMART Centres, with support from the United Kingdom.

Dominica’s growing appeal as a unique tourism destination can be attributed to efforts to enhance the quality of hotel accommodations. The nation now boasts several five-star and six-star hotels, with more in development through the Citizenship by Investment Programme. The eagerly anticipated International Airport project is a landmark initiative, funded without adding to the national debt, which is set to increase airlift to and from the island significantly.

In addition to these major developments, the Prime Minister discussed other key projects such as the cable car system in the Roseau Valley, the Cabrits Marina in Portsmouth, and the Laudat geothermal plant. These ventures represent the government’s commitment to fostering sustainable, green, and affordable energy, encouraging industrial development, and supporting business growth. The future of Dominica looks promising, with these strategic projects laying the foundation for growth and prosperity.
