DOMLEC Reels out Activities in Observance of Health and Safety Month

The Dominica Electricity Services Limited (DOMLEC) is celebrating its Health and Safety Month in May. The electricity corporation has reeled out a bevy of activities to commemorate the yearly event. The ongoing celebration is tagged “The safe way is the best way.”

According to Health and Safety Officer Brandon Henry, the month-long event underpins the importance of health and safety in every personal undertaking. He said DOMLEC officials will educate the general public on the importance of “hazard recognition, risk quantification and to ensure that controls are properly applied throughout activities” that people undertake in their personal and professional lives.

While safety is high on the priority of DOMLEC, the corporation is also highlighting the importance of health in every sphere of life. On May 9, Water Day will be celebrated and the various ways in which water is beneficial to human health will be demonstrated. May 16 is Fruit Day and people will be encouraged to consume more fruits and vegetables to maximize their health.

Henry said Dominicans will be encouraged to engage in physical exercise such as walking, jogging, swimming, and climbing on May 23 as part of the public health campaign. He said officials willl also visit schools across the country to tutor students on the importance of health and safety.

DOMLEC Public Relations Officer, Adina Bellot-Valentine, represented the General Manager, Bertilia LeBlanc-Mckenzie, at one of the corporation’s outreaches. She said the safety management system utilized by DOMLEC is second to none, and that DOMLEC employees apply safety protocols to all aspects of their jobs. She said the safety protocols initiated by one worker protect other workers within the same environment.

Utilizing our safety rules and practices to govern how we work must be a staple in our we operate and do things. However, it is not adequate to work safely merely because we are instructed to do so. We need to understand the rationale for doing so. Each employee needs to internalize our safe work practices and seek to motivate their colleagues to do so.
