As the holiday season approaches, Dominica Electricity Services Limited (DOMLEC) is taking proactive measures to minimize or entirely eliminate recent issues of load shedding that have affected customers. DOMLEC’s Acting General Manager and Restoration Coordinator, Daryl Dalrymple, shared these plans during a recent progress update.
According to Dalrymple, ensuring that their units are reliable and capable of providing uninterrupted power during the festive season is a top priority. The loss of any major unit at this point would put the company in a challenging position. Vigilant maintenance activities are being carried out to maintain the availability of their units in preparation for the holiday period.
The recent rainy weather in Dominica, while causing inconveniences in other aspects, has been beneficial for DOMLEC. It has led to lower temperatures, allowing their diesel units to function more efficiently and comfortably. This has improved their capacity to handle the current load.
In an effort to free up capacity, DOMLEC has been urging large consumers to reduce their electricity usage. This request has been extended to institutions like hospitals, the Financial Centre, government facilities, and private companies. Many of these entities have responded by self-generating power during the day. This collaborative approach aims to ensure that power is available for all domestic customers during the festive season.
