Dorian Dailey Apprehended: Closure to the Tragic Manslaughter Case

Dorian Dailey, a 29-year-old man convicted of the manslaughter of his father Murray Dailey, has been recaptured by police in the heights of Saltan. The end of the manhunt comes after Dailey’s escape from the Dominica State Prison on January 3, 2024.

Dailey’s legal ordeal began on January 9, 2017, following a heated altercation in Grand Fond. He inflicted severe head and other bodily injuries on his 62-year-old father with a cutlass. Murray Dailey was rushed to the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH), where he later died on February 21, 2017.

Following a seven-day trial in 2023, a jury found Dorian Dailey not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter. Justice Thomas W. R. Astaphan, presiding over the case, sentenced him to 28 years in prison for the crime. The trial, which saw 11 witnesses testifying, highlighted the gravity of the attack and its impact.

Inspector Fixton Henderson of the Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force (CDPF) confirmed Dailey’s capture, concluding a six-day search operation. This capture has raised questions about the security measures at the Dominica State Prison, from where Dailey had escaped.

The recapture of Dailey not only brings closure to this tragic case but also serves as a reminder of the severe consequences of such violent actions. In addition to his existing sentence, Dailey now faces additional charges for escaping lawful confinement. His initial release date was projected for May 9, 2052, but the recent escape could potentially extend this term.
