Given the stalemate between workers at the government printing press and boss Calvin “Senator” Esprit, the DPSU has decided to meet with the press workers to resolve the issue. DPSU’s general secretary Thomas Letang said union officials will meet with press workers on Tuesday, March 30 to find a solution to the impasse at the workplace.
Before coming to this point, acting Cabinet Secretary Careen Prevost, said the government will also be looking into the situation to determine what is amiss and resolve the problem.
Just last week, many workers at the printing press refused to resume to work after finding that Esprit is still retained as government printer at the establishment after his one-year contract expired on March 23. According to protesters, Esprit was brought back from retirement to work at the press and given a one-year contract which expired on March 23, but finding him at work even after is unacceptable when other qualified people are available to occupy the position.
Apart from the fact that Esprit was brought back from retirement and his additional one-year contract has expired, press workers stated that Esprit is “anti-productive” and “antagonistic” and lacks proper human relations. A number of employees said he is hostile and aggressive to the point of even labelling some uncooperative workers as “stupid”. Late last week, a few workers at the press blocked the entrance to the establishment with their cars until police officers arrived to appeal to them. However, Esprit in his interaction said there are no problems at the establishment except for two or more workers who import private family matters to the workplace.
