Dr. Fontaine Faces Leadership Contest at UWP Conference in Marigot

The United Workers Party (UWP) is set to hold its Delegates Conference tomorrow, with eleven key positions, including the party leader, being contested. Scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. at the Will Strathmore Stephen’s Primary School in Marigot, the conference is expected to be a pivotal moment for the party, possibly leading to significant changes in its leadership.

Dr. Thompson Fontaine, the current leader of UWP, is seeking re-election. His leadership has been notable for a strong focus on electoral reform and civil obedience within legal boundaries. Fontaine, who ascended to his position last November by defeating Clement Marcellin, has been both lauded and criticized for his approach. His tenure has been marked by his commitment to the party’s principles despite the challenges posed by his concurrent role as a policy advisor in South Sudan.

Fontaine’s leadership has occasionally been called into question due to his physical absence from local party activities, which some party supporters view as a hindrance to his effectiveness. Addressing these concerns, Fontaine has expressed his deep-rooted connection to Dominica and his commitment to the party’s agenda, stating his intent to continue advocating for electoral reforms.

His declaration to seek re-election was made on the ‘Talk on the Block’ program on Q95FM radio, where he emphasized his commitment to leading the party through at least one election cycle. Fontaine has emphasized the importance of a broader view of leadership, which extends beyond being physically present on the ground.

The conference also hints at a potential leadership challenge from the Deputy Leader, Marcellin, who previously contested for the top position. This adds an element of competition and intrigue to the proceedings.

As the UWP prepares for this crucial event, the outcomes of the conference and the resulting leadership decisions will be instrumental in shaping the party’s direction and strategy in the coming years.
