DSC Tourism Majors to attend Sustainable Tourism Conference in Martinique

Four students and one Lecturer of the Tourism and Hospitality Department of the Dominica State College will be representing Dominica at the inaugural International Sustainable Tourism Conference to be held in Martinique on June 6th and 7th, 2019. The theme of the Conference is “My Land, Our Mother: A Planet to Protect.”

The DSC team’s presentation, “My Earth, Our Earth, A Nugget to Preserve” will include in its focus, the resiliency of the local French architecture during the passing of Hurricane Maria as compared to the more modern architecture in the city of Roseau. This aspect was specifically requested by the Conference’s organizers as they want to explore how well Dominica’s traditional French architecture withstood the punishing attack of Hurricane Maria.

In preparing for their presentation, the students engaged in months of research and were assisted in digital documentation by Chad Ambo of Discover Dominica Authority.

A range of Latin American and Caribbean countries are expected at the conference. In fact, presentations will be in English, Spanish, Portuguese and French.

The team comprises of second-years, Janella Paul, Josefani Bello-Feliz, and first-years, Julien Valentine and Kaila-Ann Guiste. The students are accompanied by Lecturer Mrs Temra Letang-Thomas.

The students are especially grateful for the sponsorship support of former DSC Tourism majors, Eddie Harris and Almer Lawrence, as well as Alexis Tours and the President and Staff of the Dominica State College.
