DSWMC to Improve Waste Management in Roseau Next Month
The Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation (DSWMC) is expanding on its waste management mandate in Roseau next month. General Manager Florian Mitchel disclosed that as from February, the corporation will distribute litter bins and step up campaigns for a recycling facility in Dominica.
Mitchel said more than 1,100 litter bins have been distributed to residents and more will be distributed when they become available. He said that litter management is uppermost in the agenda of the DSWMC, and that this includes waste diversion to another efficient sanitary landfill apart from the one in Fond Cole.
He revealed that the Fond Cole landfill site has been in use for 18 years and that the government is looking forward to commissioning another one with the same parameters closer to the site. He said that landfills tend to fill up faster and that a space of land measuring two acres has been identified and penciled for use in the coming months.
Mitchel tasked Dominicans to separate their waste by recycling them in the most efficient manner. He said his agency has acquired equipment that will be deployed for waste collection and recycling, and that the people have to be more cooperative to ensure it works efficiently. He said items like plastic, cans, glass, pieces of metals and other recyclable materials can be put to further use instead of dumping them into landfills.
We have an equipment that is responsible for collecting your glass, plastic, and cans, but the participation from the general public is very minimal, so we would like to see a greater level of cooperation and support from the general public towards that activity.
Florian Mitchel, General Manager of DSWMC
