The DLP presented Gregory “Karessah” Riviere as the party’s candidate for Marigot constituency at the coming general elections. A former youth division officer and calypso monarch, Riviere told supporters at the Marigot Fisheries Complex that education and agriculture will take the centre-stage of his development programmes if elected as a member of parliament in the coming elections.
Talking of agriculture, Rivierre said he will assist new and practising farmers when he becomes the new Marigot MP, and also ensure that agriculture is taught is all schools in the constituency. He also plans to construct houses in Layou Park to further investments in agriculture.
“Agriculture should return to its rightful place here in this constituency,” he said. “I will work with the farmers’ groups and other individuals, to increase their skills by using modern agricultural techniques such as greenhouse farming and hydroponics. We will work with small farmers to expand their poultry and pig farms respectively.”
To establish his main concern for agriculture, the MP hopeful reveals that “I believe agriculture has fed us; agriculture sent us to school; agriculture gave us our independence. So, we must go back to the soil.”
Speaking on his plans for education, Riviere said eight people will be placed on scholarship to university this academic year. To this end, he said he will ensure that university scholarships increase to 300% for people in Marigot on a yearly basis.
“I have a vision for this constituency,” he said. “In addition, I will encourage persons to take advantage of the programme organized by the Dominica State College (DSC) to utilize the satellite programme at the North East Comprehensive because under my leadership.”
Riviere disclosed that he will increase the reaches of the National Employment Programme as well as the Yes We Care programme among others. He, therefore, urged people in Marigot to vote out Opposition Leader Lennox Linton, who is the current MP for the constituency, during the coming elections.
Speaking at the launch, PM Skerrit noted that “I am appealing to voters of the Marigot constituency to be wise in 2020. Use your 2020 vision to see who is best for you, best for your children and best for your constituency. Get registered, put partisan affiliations aside – and join the campaign of Gregory Riviere. So that at long last, the constituency of Marigot can benefit from high-quality parliamentary representation.”
But that is not all, PM Skerrit added that:
“You do not have to vote for prime minister; vote for Riviere and this Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, with the help of the supporting the people will make miracles happen in Marigot constituency. I have always said it, that the people of Marigot are among the brightest in Dominica. But this constituency needs leadership – somebody who can dream with people, somebody who can work with people to attain dreams that become realities, somebody who will see your children as their own children, somebody who will see your pain as their pain, somebody who will be there for you in good times and especially in bad times – and that is the person we are presenting to you in the person of Gregory “Karessah” Riviere.”
