Dominica’s Ministry of Education has planned a series of events to enhance family engagement and promote early childhood development. Education Minister Octavia Alfred announced that students and their families will participate in field trips, with schools focusing on ‘the potato’ this year. ‘Eat Potato Day’ is set for Monday, November 18.
Significant male figures are invited to interact with children at their centres on International Men’s Day, November 19. Community Outreach Day aims to teach children the importance of helping those in need from an early age. To encourage physical activity, Belle Marche is scheduled for Friday, November 22.
“Many of the activities this month will be observed at the Early Childhood Centres,” Alfred said. She added that 61 percent of government-owned primary schools now offer pre-kindergarten programs. New pre-kindergarten centres will open at Coulibistrie and at the Baroness Patricia Scotland Primary School in Vieille Case later this month. Four pre-kindergartens have been refurbished, and new centres have been established at Salybia under the OECS PEARL initiative.
Currently, 31 pre-kindergarten teachers are engaged in professional development to enhance early childhood education. The Ministry of Education thanked all partners who collaborated to provide quality early childhood education.
“Our children are our heritage; let us celebrate them and make this early childhood a memorable one,” Alfred encouraged.
Early Childhood Month, observed in November, will feature several activities, as announced by the Ministry of Education.
