Education Minister Highlights the Importance of Protecting Our Environment

Speaking at the Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation (DSWMC) prize-giving ceremony held at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Education Minister Octavia Alfred said all Dominicans must come together to protect the environment and make the world a safer and better place for coming generations.

In her capacity as the guest-speaker at the occasion, Alfred noted that the importance of a clean environment cannot be overemphasized. She said the DLP administration remains committed to protecting the environment with a view to preventing natural disasters and making the country truly resilient. She stated that Dominica’s natural resources as well as global environmental resources must be protected against degradation and loss.

Since 2007 the government has been clear in its mandate to increase its capacity to contend with disasters. In our quest to achieve a new more resilient Dominica therefore, we welcome initiatives such as these that highlight the importance of a clean environment.

The minister warned that the overall impacts of what people do affects the environment. According to her, improper disposal of garbage and litters leads to environmental pollution which may give rise to land, air, and water pollutions. She urged everyone to be conscious of the effect of their actions on the environment, and that children should be sensitized on the importance of environmental cleanliness.

It is especially important to orient our children in the home and at our schools about the importance of environmental awareness to ensure the lives of future generations are secured. I think it’s becoming increasingly clear that our children stand to be more affected by the rapid adverse changes brought about by our own actions.

The minister disclosed that children should be imbibed with the sanitary skills they need to tackle the challenges of environmental pollution and degration through simple cleanliness and recycling. She said the skills will go a long way into making them mature adults that remain conscious of the dangers of unsanitary behavioural habits.
