Education Minister Outlines Impacts of All Saints University on Economy

The Minister of Education, Octavia Alfred, said the All Saints University School of Medicine (ASUSM) has impacted the Dominican economy in very positive ways. The minister made this statement at the 39th White Coat Ceremony of the university over the weekend.

ASUSM is a chartered university approved by the Dominican government and authorized to confer the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree on graduate students. Graduates are eligible to work as medical doctors in Dominica. The university has been operating on the island for 13 years.

Alfred said the university has contributed to the social and economic development of Dominica, saying its students have integrated into the religious, cultural, economic, social and sporting lifestyles of the island. She added that all the personnel and staff of the university are employed and their incomes add to the tax base of the island.

“We are also grateful for the impact the University is having on Dominica’s social and economic landscape,” Octavia said. “This contribution to our tax base along with government fees, student expenditure on housing, transportation, utilities and other goods and services all contribute to the local economy.”

The government of Dominica has also been very supportive of the university and this has helped many of the international students studying there to integrate well into the Dominican society.
