Education Minister Underscores the Importance of Reading for Success at G6NA

Minister for Education, Octavia Alfred, has underscored the importance of reading for anticipated success at the Grade Six National Assessment (G6NA) examination. The minister said reading at school and at home is crucial for success and that this can be seen in the current 2021 G6NA results.

Alfred emphasized that students should be very competent at ready after three years in primary school and that this is an indication that they should do well in the G6NA. She noted that students who are not able to read well after three years in primary school might perform woefully in the said exam if care is not taken.

She therefore urged parents to encourage their children to develop an early love for reading at home.

Help grow a love for reading among our children by exposing them to books, by reading to them and by encouraging them to choose a book over the television or other forms of entertainment.

The former secondary school principal also stated that the Ministry of Education will seek to improve the performance of schools that performed below expectation in the next few months. She said the reviews to be undertaken will help the ministry to proffer helpful solutions to poor academic performances. She disclosed that ministry officials have been primed to visit schools and monitor students’ performance with a view to improving their teaching instructions.

The minister further stated that the education ministry has commissioned a working group made up of teachers, principals, and ministry officials to provide effective recommendations to improving students’ performance. She said the group is currently collecting necessary data from teachers, students, principals, community members, and industry stakeholders towards the completion of their tasks.

This intervention program is necessary because we need to identify the challenges that our students face and provide high quality teaching to address their difficulties and give effective support at the ministry level as early as possible in areas of curriculum, assessment, leadership and management.
