Education Minister Urges Students to Avoid Alcohol and Violence During Carnival

As Dominica prepares for its highly anticipated Mass Dominik 2025, Education Minister Octavia Alfred is reminding students to act responsibly during the celebrations. Addressing students in a firm but compassionate message, Alfred cautioned them to steer clear of alcohol consumption and avoid involvement in any acts of violence.
The Minister emphasized that carnival should be a time for enjoyment and cultural expression, not danger or reckless behavior. “We want you to have fun, but you must also be responsible. Carnival is no excuse for bad decisions that could affect your future,” she said.
Alfred specifically highlighted concerns about underage drinking, stressing that alcohol use by students can lead to serious consequences, both health-related and legal. She also warned against engaging in conflicts or fights, urging students to resolve differences peacefully and focus on the festive spirit of the season.
The Ministry of Education is working closely with schools to reinforce these messages before the celebrations begin. Counselors and teachers have also been encouraged to speak with students about personal safety and making positive choices during the festivities.
As carnival fever builds across the island, Alfred’s message serves as a timely reminder for students to think ahead, protect themselves, and represent their schools and families with pride.
