Education Minister Wants Books by Native Authors to Be Used In Schools

Education Minister Octavia Alfred wants books authored by local authors to be used in Dominican schools. The honourable minister did not clarify whether such books may be used in public or private schools, but she noted that native authors are gaining regional and international prominence and their works qualify for academic use.

Alfred said the rise of Dominican authors is getting phenomenal in areas of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and specialized books among others.

The minister made these suggestions at the Library Week which featured Writers Festival and where Alwin Bully and Steve Hyacinth among other prominent authors.

Meanwhile, the Measurement Officer for the Grade 6 National Assessment, Candia Robinson, noted that this years G6NA examination will hold in more than 60 centres across Dominica. She said the Ministry of Education will apply COVID-19 restrictions such as wearing of face masks, social distancing, and washing of hands at the exam centres to forestall the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

Robinson also tasked primary school students taking the G6NA to study hard for the examination and ensure that they have all their writing materials handy before coming for the exams. She also advised parents to ensure that their wards concentrate on their studies prior to the examinations and to come well-prepared.
