Education Ministry launches best practices in construction workshop

The Ministry of Education & Human Resource Development on Monday, July 22ndlaunched a two-week training programme in Best Practices in Construction for Small Contractors at the Public Service Union Building.

Over 60 small contractors and local suppliers are participating in the programme which forms part of the Dominica Climate Resilience and Restoration Project, funded by the Government of Canada through the Caribbean Development Bank.

The project includes a capacity-building and institutional strengthening component for climate-resilient and gender-responsive skills development. The training will focus on best practices in rebuilding and repair methods that have a low vulnerability to damage from disaster events; and properties of materials.  The training is expected to be delivered using a flexible modality inclusive of short intensive workshops, access to online resources and site visits.

Local suppliers will also benefit from the training. Apart from gaining useful construction knowledge, the training will guide suppliers on the adequate and appropriate inventory of supplies to cater for the construction industry.

The training is facilitated by Grenville Phillips of Walbrent College in Barbados.

Walbrent College is a Caribbean based post-secondary institution that offers an academic qualification to experienced construction personnel who successfully complete the rigorous training. Walbrent College is registered with the Barbados Accreditation Council.

Four (4) schools will be reconstructed under the Dominica Climate Resilience and Restoration Project, -the Grand Bay, Morne Jaune, Delices and WS Stevens. Pedagogical materials will be provided to the Salisbury Primary School, now under construction.
