Education Ministry to Re-Introduce Civic Education to Schools
The Ministry of Education will be re-introducing civic education to schools very soon. This revelation was made by the Minister for Education, Octavia Alfred, at a 2-day workshop to revamp the education sector for the 5-year period 2000-2025.
The honourable minister said a new curriculum to cover civic subjects and other related knowledge is in the works and will be unveiled soon. She added that the re-introduction of civic education will equip students with the skills necessary for national life and patriotic responsibilities.
“We want to develop students who can become future leaders, who are creative, who can solve their everyday problems, and the bigger more pressing problems of their world; students who can negotiate, resolve conflicts, and manage stress and anger well,” Hon. Alfred stated. “Students who are not only psycho-socially competent and intelligent, but students who feel a high level of civic responsibility.”
Permanent secretary in the education ministry, Chandler Hyacinth, said the initiative was first mooted by Dr. Didacus Jules who began the “every learner succeeds” programme. Hyacinth disclosed that the roadmap already jumpstarted by Jules would provide assist the ministry of education to improve educational delivery over the next five year.
This plan also responds to the developmental priorities, It highlights the main policy issues which include issues related to access and quality of our education system, as well as those related to governance, management, and finance.

The two-day workshop and the focal educational plan was sponsored by the Canadian government through the Caribbean Development Bank.
