Education Ministry Trains Teachers and Principals on Learning Strategies
The Ministry of Education is currently training teachers and principals on effective learning strategies for students across Dominica. The 3-day training session started on Wednesday, February 17 and will conclude on Friday, February 19. The Professional Development Training programme will expose teachers on how to effectively teach difficult subjects, and will equip principals to monitor teachers for compliance with the training.
According to Acting Chief Education Officer, Dr. Jeffrey Blaize, participants will be sensitized to students’ needs in the areas of writing, comprehension skills, teaching technologies, proficiency in the English Language for international students, as well as efficient impartation of academic knowledge. He said the education ministry has identified the lapses in these areas during the national assessment and that teachers and principals will be equipped to plug the holes to improve the quality of education on the island.
While the introduction of learning aids and technology will be added to learning activities, the addition of teaching English Language to international students will enable such students to benefit from the Dominican educational system. “In many instances these students are very bright, but they have challenges in learning in terms of the barrier for the English language,” Blaize revealed.
The acting chief education officer said principals will be able to monitor teachers to ensure that they put what they learn during the 3-day training session to good use in the classroom. He stated that principals will monitor and ensure that teachers implement the skills they have acquired at the training programme to further the comprehension abilities of students. This will ultimately ensure that students meet the desired outcomes of the academic curriculum designed and set forth by the government.
