Press Release

Electoral Reform Effort panel discussion

As part of our efforts at public education and interaction, the Group of Church, Business and Civil Society leaders will be hosting another panel discussion on Tuesday 28th May 2019 to help members of the public understand the electoral process, their role in electoral reform and the reform or enhancement requirements that are possible at this stage, and their role in electoral reform effort.

At its meetings with the political parties as key stakeholders, each of these parties gave the undertaking that they would be willing to hold discussions with larger bodies, including other political parties, in order to further progress on electoral reform.

Invitations therefore have been extended to the the leaders of the three (3) main political parties, or a suitable delegate of their choice, along with a second person who may be a legal professional, to participate in the public discussion entitled,

“Electoral Reform – Facilitating the verification of identity of persons on the Voter’s Registration Lists to enhance the process of issuing Voter ID Cards as an administrative tool in Sanitising Voters Registration List.”

We believe that the public would be short-changed if we do not foster the participation by the Dominica Freedom Party (DFP), the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) and the United Workers Party (UWP), the three (3) main political parties, at this educational event, and other future events.

The Group recognizes the authority of the Electoral Commission in ensuring a free and fair electoral process and appeals to all stakeholders, including political parties and the general public, to assist in whatever way possible to facilitate the process. The Group had originally scheduled and invited the parties to this Discussion for 21st May 2019. However, on learning from the Electoral Office on the evening of 14th May 2019 that it had itself scheduled a National Panel Discussion on 22nd May 2019, the Group, out of courtesy to the Electoral Commission, yielded to the education effort of the Electoral Commission to avoid back to back activities of similar nature.

The Group therefore invites the public to attend and meaningfully participate in both these civil discussions, that of the 22nd May 2019 sponsored by the Electoral Commission and that 28th May 2019 hosted by the Group. The Group will therefore host its discussion from 7:00 pm on Tuesday 28th May 2019 at the downstairs conference room of the Dominica Public Service Union building on Valley Road, Roseau.

The Group looks forward to another successful and educational public discussion where the representatives of the three (3) main political parties will engage the public in another panel discussion on at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday 28th May, 2019 at the DPSU.
