Eminent Jurist Charles Byron Becomes Commissioner for Electoral Reform

PM Roosevelt Skerrit has appointed eminent Caribbean jurist, Sir Charles Michael Dennis Byron, as sole commissioner for electoral reform in Dominica. Skerrit revealed shortly after swearing in his new cabinet that Sir Charles Byron accepted his invitation for the job. He said a secretariat will be set up to enable the sole administrator for electoral reform to perform his job efficiently.

A top Caribbean jurist, Sir Byron became the Chief Justice of the Caribbean Court of Justice before his recent retirement. Skerrit said the new commissioner will steer the country into implementing electoral reforms for the betterment of all Dominicans in the years to come. He said the terms and reference under which the sole administrator will work will be revealed to him early in the New Year.

“On elections night I indicated my intention to establish a national commission on electoral reform led by a renowned Caribbean jurist,” Skerrit said. “The government has invited, and the invitation has been accepted…the establishment of the commission now takes the matter out of the political sphere. It will inspire confidence at home and abroad in the transparency and impartiality of the process.”

The prime minister used the occasion to reiterate his call to work together with the UWP opposition for the sake of national interest.

“To the United Workers Party opposition and its leader, I say the elections are over; the time for national healing reconciliation and unity has come,” he said. “I extend a hand of brotherhood to you and invite you to work in peace with the government and initiatives that will advance the national interest.”
