Eminent Jurist Dennis Byron to Visit Dominica In Pursuit of Electoral Reform
Eminent Caribbean jurist Sir Charles Michael Dennis Byron is set to visit Dominica in respect of the proposed electoral reform promised by PM Roosevelt Skerrit. The prime minister announced that Byron, who was appointed a sole commissioner for electoral reform in the country, will be visiting the island on an information-gathering exercise.
“We have developed draft terms of reference for the commissioner for Sir Dennis Byron,” Skerrit said. “We expect Sir Dennis Byron to make a first visit to Dominica in the month of March on our information gathering exercise and once he comes into Dominica, he will be exposed to all the relevant stakeholders including the media.”
Skerrit said his administration is working very hard to implement electoral reform before the next election. He said with Byron as sole commissioner for electoral reform, parliament must sit soonest to deliberate the matter so that every aspect of the proposal can be laid to rest and implemented before the next election.
He noted that after the House of Assembly has finalized the drafts of the electoral reforms, they can be dispatched to Byron for vetting before his scheduled visit to Dominica.
A former president of the Caribbean Court of Justice, Sir Byron is also the president of the Commonwealth Judicial Education Institute, and is a former president of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, as well as former Chief Justice of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court.
