The Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation (DSWMC) has finalized plans to establish a Recycling Unit for effective waste management. The agency is collaborating with the Skerrit-led administration and the OECS Commission for the project. General Manager Florian Mitchel said waste diversion is a core project of the agency in 2022.
Mitchel appealed to members of the public to protect the natural environment from degradation by engaging in recommended waste disposal techniques.
The PRO for DSWMC, Rhoda St. John, said it is offensive and illegal to dispose of waste along public roads and in unapproved sites. St. John said dumping of trash and other household garbage in rivers and main thoroughfare makes the community unsightly, and that offenders will be arrested and prosecuted.
The PRO called for a clean and green environment that will promote community health as well as attract investors.
The government continues to increase its strides in the tourism sector, and a clean environment is key for success in the sector. With clean rivers and greener cities, investors and tourists will be attracted to the country as a Nature Isle and this will boost the tourism revenue of the nation.
Environmental experts and activists in the country urge that all citizens should be aware of the effects of unauthorized refuse dumping on the communities and the country at large.
