A 21-year-old female footballer with a Dominican father and Canadian mother has signed up with Manchester United Women’s Football Club. Jayde Riviere signed a three-year contract with Man-U women’s club and looks forward to playing in the Women’s Super League games in the UK.
Riviere was part of the Olympic Gold Medal 2020 Canadian National Women’s squad since the age of 14. She hopes to be part of the 2023 Women’s World Cup which is to be hosted by Australia and New Zealand, having featured as the captain of her team in 36 games before qualifying for the World Cup.
A former student of the University of Michigan, Riviere dropped out of school to pursue professional football before signing up with Man-U. She posed with the Dominican flag at the Olympic Village in Japan to demonstrate her love for Dominica. She said her dad, Tony Riviere, inculcated Dominican culture into her early and she is proud to show off the Dominican side of her.
I have been fortunate to appreciate my heritage and culture through my dad. My dad is a proud Dominican and has made sure to pass that on to me. I intend to hold some clinics for women in Dominica to help raise the profile and benefits that the sport offers to women.
